Buy/Sell - NBA Edition

Everyone's watching football and baseball right now. Which is exactly why NBA cards are worth a look!

With the season two months out, it’s not at full attention yet, and that's the whole opportunity. In some cases, prices haven't caught up to what's actually happening on rosters this summer.

In others, prices have been driven so high that it’s time to sell.

Let's get into who I'm buying, and who I'm staying away from.

Buy Candidates

✅ Jayson Tatum

Ever since he came back from injury, he’s steadily dropped. There’s a perception that the Celtics screwed up the Brown trade (and they might have), but they could still be better than last year.

Tatum missed most of the season, so essentially you could say they’re swapping Brown for Tatum, adding Paul George, and then signing Mitchell Robinson, who can be extremely impactful.

I think it’s still a team that wins a ton of games with their depth, coaching, and a top-5 player.

Pricing is back down close to his injury lows, with plenty of history telling us it could push back up.

✅ Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Don’t lose sight that he’s on one of the best runs ever for a guard (or anyone, really). A championship, 2 MVPs, and 4 straight 1st Team All-NBAs while scoring above 30 points per game. They would’ve beaten the Spurs if everyone was healthy, and they should be the favorites this year.

SGA’s pricing (rightfully) just keeps going up because he’s becoming an All-Time Great… and since he’s down now, it’s a good time to buy in. (I almost bought in around $220, and I’m kicking myself right now)

✅ Lauri Markkanen

If all goes according to plan, the Jazz will be the most improved team in the NBA (Pacers & Wizards could be there also) with Markkanen as their leading scorer. His value is pretty low, but this team is seriously better than last year’s, and him doing his thing on a good team could help. I usually invest in superstars, but he’s a cheap flier.

✅ Paolo Banchero

I still believe! He has superstar potential and has played like one in the playoffs before. His pricing has really tumbled, and last year’s team had lots of injuries. If they can stay healthy for a bit and their new coach helps their offense, Banchero could rise. Like Markkanen, this is a flier - I wouldn’t go all-in on him.

✅ Matas Buzelis

On a dismal Bulls team, he’s gone under the radar.

Year 1: 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1 assist, 0.9 blocks

Year 2: 16.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.5 blocks

He’s still 21 and is about to get more eyes on his team as people tune in to watch Caleb Wilson. While the young rookie will have some awesome moments, I’m guessing Buzelis will be the steadier player who flirts with becoming a star in year 3.

✅ Knueppel, Flagg, Harper

I think all of these guys are in great position to take leaps. Flagg could be something close to a true superstar this year, Knueppel is down from the way his season ended, and a full year of Harper playing like he did in the playoffs would have him rising.

I’ve covered these guys ad nauseam in previous issues.

Sell Candidates

❌ LeBron James

The Philly bump is real:

This card should not have doubled since the start of July. This is going to be a really good team, but Embiid’s always injured, and LeBron will likely see minutes and touches decline, along with missing many games. Obviously I like him long-term, but I don’t think we’ll see highs like this again for a while.

Good time to sell and buy back in when it drops to a reasonable level.

❌ Tyrese Haliburton

It depends on what cards you’re looking at in Card Ladder, but he’s had several that are either on par with or even higher than his improbable run to the Finals:

That blows my mind. How can he top that? The East is better, and he’s not going to make a run at MVP.

❌ Anthony Edwards

I love Edwards, but I’m just looking at the pricing action on his PSA 10 Prizm.

He’s hitting up against 2-year highs right now ($140). His team is thin at the 4 & 5, and LaMelo hasn’t exactly been the healthiest player. I think the team is worse than last year, and Ant’s pricing drops as the team underperforms. They’re not actual contenders in the West.

Takeaways

That's where I'm at with the NBA right now. A handful of guys the market hasn't caught up to yet, and a couple where the price has already run further than what's actually likely to happen this season.

Two months is plenty of time for these to move. Get in on the cheap ones now, and don't be afraid to take the win on the ones that already ran.
