You Don't Have to Do It All (How I Flip in 5 Hours a Week)
If you spend any time in the hobby online, it's easy to feel like everyone else is doing more than you.
They're buying on five different platforms, collecting every sport, watching live breaks at midnight, and refreshing Instagram all day to catch the next hot deal. And somewhere in there, you start to wonder if that's the price of admission. Like maybe you have to do all of that too if you ever want to make real money flipping cards.
I'm here to tell you that you don't. And honestly, doing less is usually how you win.
Why I keep it to five hours a week
Let me be upfront about my situation. I've got kids, I run a freelance content business, and I cook every meal at my house. I'm a very busy guy. Five hours a week is genuinely about all I've got to give the hobby, so every minute I spend on it has to count.
That constraint shaped everything about how I flip. I don't go to card shows. I don't hit hobby shops.
Those things aren't bad at all, they just don't fit my life. I almost never rip, and I stay away from breaks like the plague (if you're profit-focused, you will too).
When you're strapped for time like I am, you learn to stick to the stuff that actually generates ROI, plus a little hunting for my own PC: top-75 NBA player autos and meaningful Laker cards.
The "do everything" trap
There's a certain type of flipper who tries to do a little bit of everything. They dabble in every sport, mess around on every platform, and chase every strategy they see someone post about. They're the classic jack of all trades, master of none.
The problem is they spread themselves so thin that they never get good enough at any one thing to actually compete. It feels productive to have your hands in everything, but most of the time, it's just being busy. And busy doesn't matter for ROI.
You can build real income from a single lane
Here's something I don't think people say enough. You could make a full-time income in this hobby doing just one narrow thing.
I mean that literally. Someone could earn a great living doing nothing but flipping baseball. Or just basketball. Or just football. Or by only buying and holding boxes, or focus entirely on grading, or flip nothing but cards that are already graded and never touch a raw card in their life.
You could go even narrower and flip nothing but Downtowns, or Joe Burrow cards, or Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The specific lane doesn't matter. You don’t have to go that specific, but I’m just making the point that you could.
Honestly, I sometimes wonder if even I'm spread too thin. I focus on basketball first, then football, then sprinkle in a little baseball.
I buy and grade, I buy and flip, and I buy and flip boxes. That's really the whole operation. Stack that with a few frameworks I actually trust, and it's enough to flip for good profit every month in five hours a week or less.
One buying & selling platform
I only buy & sell on eBay.
Going along with today’s theme of efficiency, for me, there’s no reason to browse IG, join live sales on Whatnot, search on Facebook Marketplace, etc.
If you want to do business on those platforms…great! But I see that as more because you like the relationship aspects of being part of a community or meeting people one-on-one.
For buying cards fast and ease of selling, eBay’s the winner, and it’s not close.
Plus, you can get really good at using the platform if it’s all you use.
Why sticking to what you know actually makes you money
There's a deeper reason focus works, and it matters most when it comes to which sports you buy.
If you only invest in sports you follow religiously, you can form your own opinion on who's a smart buy. But if you're buying based on what everyone else says is hot, you're almost always too late.
By the time the hobby is loudly hyping a guy, his price has already moved. The window closed before you even heard about it.
The real advantage comes from knowing a sport well enough to have your own read on where things are going. You want to be listening to the analysts who actually call what's coming next, not the crowd reacting to what already happened.
That's a lot easier when you're focused on one or two sports you genuinely love instead of trying to track all of them at once.
The Takeaway
So if you've been feeling behind because you're not doing as much as the next guy, let that go.
You don't need more. You need less, done better. Pick a lane that fits your life, get genuinely good at it, and let the rest go. That's how this becomes a profitable side income instead of a second job you didn't sign up for.
