Hybrid Short/Medium Flips - Getting Into the Best Investments Possible

The bulk of my flips (excluding buy-and-grades) are designed to sell within 3-6 months.

It’s designed to keep my money moving in a way that compounds profit quickly over time.

And sometimes, I get lucky, and it happens super fast…

Like with a couple of Wemby and Harper cards that I sold for 30% ROI just 1-2 weeks after getting them as the playoffs rolled around.

Or the Silver Prizm Austin Reaves that I bought before the Lakers had a good run to end the season. I had this card for less than 2 weeks before moving it.

(That was lucky, as I sold it right before he got injured)

Buying a Card With Potential to Rise

So, this should go without saying, but too many investors buy without much evidence other than “he’s good” or “I like him….”

But… I never buy a card unless there are at least a few reasons why I think that player is going to rise in the next 3-6 months.

It’s usually a combo of:

  • Pricing Trend

  • Market Timing

  • Player/team potential

Now, you could write a book about each of those three items.

But let’s look at a quick example with Josh Allen.

I don’t like him right now because his pricing is so high. What could he do in the next 3 months to push up his pricing another significant amount so that I could flip him for profit?

Even 6 months from now, we’d need to see him in the Super Bowl, and what are the odds that happens? I’m not investing based on that.

But, of course, even for your best targets, short-term flips don’t always work out.

What do you do if 3-6 months pass and the price hasn’t moved where you need it to?
