With the NFL season just around the corner (and preseason already here!), Let’s do a deep dive into some of the players I’m watching and some I’m out on.
One caveat: Just because I list a player here as a “buy” doesn’t mean to go and snatch up the first card you see. As always, stack 3-5 reasons why that player & card are a good investment. Can you find it at the right price? Is there a good exit window? Do I want to consider this for a grade?
That said, let’s jump in!
Who I’m Watching / Buying
Let’s get into some of the guys I’m highest on:
Justin Herbert
He’s in a tremendous situation - great coach, great offensive coordinator, and his line (hopefully) will be much healthier this year. Everyone knows he has MVP-type talent, but can they win a bunch of games with big stats from him?
I think it’s possible. A tough division hurts, but I still think he balls out.
Lamar Jackson
When healthy, he is the offense…but having Henry in the backfield certainly doesn’t hurt.
After a tremendous start to last season, injuries hurt his pricing. For example, here’s a card that has frequently hit $160-$170 in pricing, with some recent sales around $110:

With another MVP-type season (which he usually does when healthy), I think he jumps right back.
Ashton Jeanty
To me, he’s a guy the hobby wants to love. He was electric in college, and then was plopped into one of the worst situations in the league.
The Raiders won’t be at the top of the league, but better QB, O-line, and coaching situations should help. Last year, he ranked dead last in yards before contact, which a better scheme and line should help dramatically.
Jaxson Dart
Similar to Jeanty, I think he’s walking into a better situation than last year… and he was still pretty good (and exciting) last year!
There are some concerns, such as whether he’s truly on a superstar path and whether he will struggle with injuries.
I like him as a quicker flip - buy him soon and then offload after the Giants cupcake first 6 weeks when hopefully he’s risen due to good play.
Jordan Love
He’s regularly one of the better QBs, but his PSA 10 Prizm pricing still lags behind guys like Trevor Lawrence and Baker Mayfield.
It’s a negative that his pricing has stayed relatively down for 2 years, but the Packers face one of the easiest slates of defenses in the league over the first weeks. I’d love to see him jump to a fast start and see his prices rise.
Puka Nacua
Honestly, there’s not much more for him to do other than play another year as perhaps the best all-around player in football (various metrics had him as that last year).
His PSA 10 Prizms sell for around $55, while Justin Jefferson’s have frequently been $80 - $100. Why can’t Puka close the gap with another tremendous season on a Super Bowl contender?
Who I’m Selling / Staying Away From
These players have pricing situations that are stay-aways:
Josh Allen
I see him and Lamar as very similar: all-time great regular season QBs with lacking postseason resumes.
The difference is that Lamar’s pricing has dropped while Josh Allen’s is way up. If he wins a Super Bowl, he’ll get a nice bump. But what are the odds of that? I’m not investing in a rare event.

Patrick Mahomes
Many of his cards have steadily risen since the season ended… which I find a bit strange.
Of course, he’s one of the best ever, but short-term, I don’t like that he’s coming off a major injury, with a team that doesn’t really seem better than last year.
Did you know he hasn’t even put up 30 TDs in a season since 2022? It seems like Andy Reid has had trouble dialing up easy offense the past few years.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind him as a “forever” hold… but for a shorter flip, I wouldn’t be jumping to get in.
Caleb Williams
For someone who hasn’t accomplished much, his Prizm cards have skyrocketed.
Yes, he has tremendous potential and finished the season strong, but he’s already priced like a superstar:

You see how price has stalled out there at the $200-$250? That’s a decent indicator that we’ve entered “wait and see” mode. The hobby is done going up for now, and there’s a good chance he’ll start dropping.
Sure, if he comes out and is the best player in football, he’ll rise, but I just wouldn’t bet on it. I’d sell if I had this card. You might be able to buy back in at a better price 5-10 weeks into the season, where they face the 3rd-hardest group of defenses.
Takeaways
That's where I'm at heading into the season. A few guys I think the hobby hasn't caught up to yet, and a few where the price has already moved up too far.
Remember, none of this means buy or sell blind. Stack your own evidence, check the chart, know your exit before you're in. That's the whole game.
Who are you excited about this coming season? Would love to hear who's on your watch lists!
